WiFi: The Technology Driving Modern Communications

Our lives are surrounded by wireless products. Cell phones, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, laptops with wireless internet, and GPS devices are all items we use every day. They make things easier, more convenient. Sure, it can be argued that they complicate things as well, but overall we’re a lot better off because of them.

Wireless communication works through the sending and receiving of radio signals. The signals basically bounce through the air back and forth between the starting point and the end point, which is the cell phone, GPS system, or computer. Some wireless communication is done through satellites as well. The signal bounces up to the satellite from the starting point and down to the receiving device. This is wireless communication in simple terms. The act is more complex because you have to have the right equipment and understand the use of radio waves, but the average person doesn’t need to understand that to get the benefits of it.

Wireless is great for most of our needs, but it is not sufficient for everything. Sometimes the signals are interrupted or lost and the wireless connection breaks. This can be very frustrating, especially when your phone drops and important call or your internet stops working in the middle of an important assignment. Also, the bandwidth available with a wireless connection is much less through a standard, wired connection. So if you were to use a wireless network connection in your workplace you would probably find that it bottlenecks easily, goes to slow to meet your needs, and in some cases freezes up. For most network connections the base connection needs to be wired because it gives extra bandwidth. The remaining connections can be wireless, if necessary.

Another factor that plays an important role in the functionality of wireless is the equipment used. The phrase ‘you get what you pay for’ applies here as well. Wireless equipment manufacture needs to be done by a reputable company that takes pride in its work and tests at least some of the outgoing, completed equipment. A good company will have a strong understanding of wireless and its uses and will have experts in the field of wireless technology as part of their team.

Wireless technology has already been applied to our lives in a way that adds convenience and ease to much of what we do, but it’s really only the beginning. Technology will continue to advance, wireless technology right along with it. Who knows, maybe in ten years we’ll have wireless television sets. The opportunities are endless.
