Whether you own a iPhone or an iPod touch you are probably aware that Apple has allowed the developers of the world to build applications to run on their systems. Much like Facebook and other social network applications they are ways for developers to build and sell programs within the iPhone network. These programs have been hugely successful and while they do make other companies wealthy in the long run it increases the popularity of iPhone, which is smart business!
The problem is there are way too many applications and most of them are really childish. Now the nice part is they are relatively easy to navigate through because they force you to use iTunes, which for the most part I dislike but in this case it does make it easier to sift through the crap.
So what could the developer world do to increase the level of quality on the iPhone app network? First off I would suggest that at this time there are enough applications that make fart noises or show someone picking their nose so let’s just say that has been taken care of and now we can move on. I think there is a demand for smart applications that rather than time wasting ones. We need more that actually serve a useful purpose.
I think right now there is still a market for internet dating applications, to my knowledge there are only 3 so far and most of them are very weak in design and cost money. There is a market for a slick free dating application and my guess is we will see some pop up in the very near future!
I am not surprised that the big dating sites that have been around for ages have so far failed in this market. These companies are often so big and miss managed that they can’t compete with this new types of technology. It will be a small company with some young developers that will create a slick dating application that will win in this market. Much like the success of just about any other internet startup, the large companies struggle to keep up with market technology and demand. Except maybe Google they really are the anomaly in the tech world.
I for one look forward to these new and exciting offerings for the iPhone application network and other sites like Facecbook and MySpace. I think I can speak for everyone in saying that there needs to be a little more of a grown up approach to these new applications if any of these guys expect to hit more than just the teenage market!
