If you think that the messages that you text from your cell phone are private, you are in for a surprise. It doesnt take much for law enforcement to get access to your records of messages sent and received. This has gotten many people into trouble recently, and therefore you need to be aware of it. Most of the time the messages were meant as a joke but they were taken offensively.
Another common scenario is young people sending messages that are sexual in nature. This can be viewed as pornography or as harassment. For some 18 or 19 year olds it has also meant having to register as a sex offender. They sent messages to those that were under age and therefore it was considered an act against a child. More prosecutors are taking this type of act to the extreme so dont assume you can get off with just a warning.
In some divorce proceedings the text messages from one part to another have been introduced as evidence. It doesnt show yourself in a good light when the messages contain threats to your ex spouse. Sometimes things said out of anger through texting can result in some serious repercussions. Make sure you allow yourself time to cool down before you send information that you normally wouldnt.
At the very least, it can save you from having to apologize later on. If there is a chance that the relationship can be mended, it will be easier to do so without negative text messages from you. Students have been caught in class texting about the teacher or other students too which has landed them in hot water as well. There isnt much you can do to hide the messages either if your phone gets taken away while you are writing one or reading one.
Children also need to realize that their parents may take a close look at their text messages. They may not like it but parents are paying for the phone and they have the ability to check it out. If you are texting materials your parents wouldnt approve of then you are risking getting your cell phone taken away or worse.
Even though texting is the most common form of communication out there now, you do need to watch your back with it. Dont send messages that could be taken wrong by the other party. If you feel that you have received messages that are threatening though you should report it to the authorities. However, make sure you use your own judgment. You dont want to get people into serious trouble when they didnt mean for the materials to be taken that way.
